These may include kidney stones, chronic kidney disease, renal failure, chronic urinary tract infections, and other disorders that affect the kidneys. When a patient’s condition is serious enough to cause kidney failure, Dr. Matthews may be responsible for managing the dialysis process.
Dr. Matthews introduced and developed the Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CCRT) to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Lewis-Gale Hospital bringing the standard of hemodialysis up to date in the Roanoke-Salem region. Critically ill patients with renal failure now have the option to receive continuous therapies including hemodialysis, hemofiltration, hemodiafiltration, and ultrafiltration.
Dr. Matthews also was the first to introduce nocturnal dialysis in the Radford area and then to the Roanoke-Salem area.
